DC Sprag One-Way Clutch Freewheels

Overrunning clutch and freewheel units for indexing, backstop and one-way torque transmission in industrial drives.

Operating principle

Sprag-type one-way clutches use inclined sprag elements between inner and outer races. In the driving direction the sprags wedge to transmit torque; in the opposite direction they release so the outer race can overrun.

Freewheel units are used where rotation must be prevented in one direction while allowing free rotation in the other -- for example conveyor backstops, indexing mechanisms and dual-motor drives.

Industry references

INA, Stieber and Tsubaki are commonly cited manufacturers for sprag clutch and freewheel products. Golden Bearing Company does not claim supply of every series without verification. Share your bore, torque, speed and mounting arrangement for quotation.

Selection factors

Torque duty

Rated torque, peak overload and engagement frequency must match the application cycle.

Speed

Overrunning speed and lubrication requirements vary by size and manufacturer series.

Mounting

Shaft, bore and housing interfaces must be aligned to avoid sprag mis-engagement.

Environment

Contamination, temperature and maintenance access affect seal and lubricant choice.
